Product Design Alumni Profile: Chris Magoba

Chris completed our ten week part-time Product Design (UX/UI) course in September 2019, and since then has secured a permanent role as an Associate Product Designer for a London-based fin-tech start-up.

Tell us a little about your current work?

Before starting the Product Design UX/UI course, I had recently graduated from university and was working as a freelancer; and prior to this I had been an intern, working in consumer products for a multinational media & entertainment company. Shortly after finishing the course, I secured a permanent role as an Associate Product Designer for a fin-tech start-up. One thing I love about the role is that there’s lots of potential to work in different areas and learn from the wider design team.

What made you choose Experience Haus?

After a few days comparing different courses, I chose Experience Haus because I felt I’d get the most meaningful teaching and also the best value for money. The biggest draw, for me, was the fact that while studying on the course we’d actually be working individual on real briefs for real start-ups.

What did you want to achieve from your Experience Haus course? Do you think that objective was fulfilled?

The main things I wanted to get out of this course were general experience working on a project, end-to-end, in the context of digital products & service; and to get a better understanding of UX/UI design best practices. I also wanted something more relevant to add to my portfolio and hopefully make connections that could lead to job opportunities.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

One thing I really enjoyed about the course was the general atmosphere. Classes at Experience Haus are very small (8 people), so we basically got as much 1-to-1 time with the instructor as we wanted. We all got along really well, we often had snacks during class and our instructor was really good at making the classes engaging. I also really enjoyed the project for the start-up. My client was very responsive, helpful and open to hearing/seeing new ideas.

What was the one big takeaway from your course and how will you apply it to your life?

One big takeaway I’d say are the connections I’ve made through completing the course and generally being involved with Experience Haus. This has encouraged to get more involved in industry related events like hackatons.

What advice would you give someone thinking of joining your industry?

Practice! The best way to learn is by doing (in my opinion).

Experience Haus is proud of the connections we foster before, during, and after the course. What was your personal experience with your cohort?

It was great. We all got along really well, had good banter and even hung-out outside of class. Also taking part in things like the hackathon and coming to the Christmas Haus Party was really cool. I truly feel like part of the Experience Haus community.

What would be your dream job?

Difficult to say exactly, but I’d love to working with/for an interesting company in role where I feel like I’m being challenged.
